Kausik Ray

Kausik Ray is one of the most pre-eminent preventative cardiologists in the world, with over 200,000 citations for his research and over 500 publications in top-quality peer-reviewed journals. He is the Professor of Public Health, Honorary Consultant Cardiologist, Head of Commercial Trials and Deputy Director of the Imperial Clinical Trials Unit at Imperial College London and Immediate Past President of the European Atherosclerosis Society and has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci).

Having completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School and an MPhil in epidemiology from the University of Cambridge, Prof Ray is the lead investigator for several major global medical trials of novel therapies for the prevention of cardiovascular disease.  With papers published the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JAMA, Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, his research focuses on the prevention of coronary disease, in particular cholesterol, lipids, diabetes, biomarkers and risk prediction.

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology, the American Heart Association and the Royal Colleges of Physicians (London and Edinburgh), he is also a member of the British Cardiovascular Society.

The pioneer of the EAS Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) Studies collaboration – the first and only global registry of FH – he has also served on the EAS Consensus panel for European Guidelines for the past 10 years, with key original research contributions having influenced European and American guidelines on prevention and having changed warning labels for common therapies by the FDA and EMEA.

Michael Shapiro

Michael D. Shapiro is the Fred M. Parrish Professor of Cardiology and Molecular Medicine at Wake Forest University, where he serves on the faculty in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine. After completing his cardiology fellowship, Dr. Shapiro pursued two additional years of advanced clinical and research training in cardiovascular imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital. Since then, his career has been devoted to the study of lipids, atherosclerosis, and the prevention of cardiovascular disease. He currently serves as the Director of the Center for Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and as Co-Director of the NIH T32 Fellowship Program in Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention.

Dr. Shapiro has received research funding from the NIH, the American Heart Association, and several foundations. His research spans translational science, cardiovascular epidemiology, and clinical trials of innovative lipid-modulating therapies. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of lipids, subclinical atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease prevention, with an extensive portfolio of publications in these areas. His broad body of work in these domains and related therapeutic interventions has established him as a leader in the field.

In addition to his research, Dr. Shapiro holds numerous leadership roles in large international clinical trials and professional societies. He currently serves as President of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology and is Chair-elect of the AHA Council on Lipidology, Lipoprotein, Metabolism, & Thrombosis. Alongside his clinical and research activities, Dr. Shapiro is highly regarded for his commitment to mentorship. He has played a pivotal role in guiding the careers of cardiology fellows, medical residents, and students, many of whom have gone on to achieve significant academic and clinical success.
