MONCYTE Health is proud to announce that Prof. Michael D. Shapiro has joined the company as a Scientific Advisor, deepening its clinical and scientific leadership in cardiometabolic disease.
Prof. Shapiro is the Fred M. Parrish Professor of Cardiology and Molecular Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, where he directs the Center for Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of lipids, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease prevention. Alongside his clinical and research activities, Prof. Shapiro is highly regarded for his commitment to mentorship and holds numerous leadership roles in large international clinical trials and professional societies. He is Immediate Past President of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology and board-certified in cardiovascular disease and Chair-elect of the AHA Council on Lipidology, Lipoprotein, Metabolism, & Thrombosis.
His career has been devoted to the study of lipids, atherosclerosis, and the prevention of cardiovascular disease. MONCYTE Health’s platform brings that focus down to the cellular level, measuring how monocytes accumulate lipid and transform into foamy, cholesterol-laden cells that build atherosclerotic plaque, revealing novel layers of cardiovascular risk.
“For too long, we’ve relied on static cholesterol numbers that don’t fully explain why some patients remain at risk despite treatment. A functional understanding of how cells handle LDL and lipids adds a valuable new dimension to how we think about that risk, and I’m excited to support MONCYTE Health as they advance this work toward clinical practice,” said Prof. Michael Shapiro.
CEO Tamara Alagirova commented: “Prof. Shapiro’s achievements in cardiovascular prevention are widely recognized. Just as important to me is the person behind it, thoughtful, kind, and engaged from our very first conversation. We are delighted to welcome him to MONCYTE Health.”
The appointment adds to MONCYTE Health’s advisory network as the company advances its cellular lipid platform toward clinical validation.
MONCYTE Health looks forward to working closely with Prof. Shapiro as the company continues to develop solutions aimed at transforming the understanding and treatment of cardiovascular disease.
